Bug Bonanza!!!!!!

Bug Bonanza!!!!!!

It is that time of the year, Lobster Season is opening so everyone can start legally catching their favorite tasty crustacean.  This is just a quick little blog to help everyone have a great time while lobstering.  There are a couple of important items to remember to have a safe, fun, and productive season.

Always remember the 5 P’s: Prior Proper Planning Prevents Problems.  What that means is make sure you and your equipment are ready to go diving, BEFORE you go diving.  Please be sure that your dive equipment is working properly.  Pretty much every scuba equipment manufacturer recommends that all equipment should be bench tested annually and serviced every 2 years.  When was the last time your life support equipment was checked?  If you cannot remember, it would be a safe idea to get your gear serviced (at a minimum bench-tested) before you go diving.  Also, double check your bugging gear.  Finding out your net has a big hole in it by watching a lobster swim out of it is not fun.

The most important item to always consider is your and your buddy’s safety.  Safety begins before you go diving.  If you are an infrequent diver, going over the standard dive skills in a pool with an instructor will make that first dive so much easier.  Make sure you know how to clear your mask, recover, and clear your regulator, and how to use your buddy’s alternate air source.  Trying to remember these skills while also chasing after lobster can be a recipe for disaster.  When diving, always keep an eye on your air gauge and dive computer as well as your buddy’s air.  When you are under water, have fun, be safe, and catch your limit of bugs!

Catching bugs is a blast, that’s why the Keys get way over-crowded during mini-season. There’s always accidents and sadly, more years than not, there are also fatalities. Don’t forget to hoist your dive flag to the highest possible point on your vessel. Towing a float with a dive flag is also highly recommended. Always a good idea to come up right beside the boat. If that’s not possible, never ascend if you hear the sound of a boat getting louder. Wait until the motor noise starts to wane before surfacing. Scuba Marco wants you to stay safe and encourage you to purchase your equipment from us prior to heading down:
