Lessons From the Underworld, Embracing Diversity, U.S.A. to D.S.A.

I’m drawing from past memories, not recent experiences because the opportunities to dive locally have been very limited in January. The cold fronts are set on rapid fire mode once again this year. One of the coolest things I love seeing on a dive is a healthy cleaning station. It amazes me to watch big grouper allow cleaner shrimp prance around their mouth cleaning their gum line. They look much more content than I feel while I’m in a dentist chair! Symbiotic relationships are beautiful and prevalent in the Under(water)world. Nature is rich with mutually beneficial relationships, not just underwater but on land and in the air. Do you remember when humans used to try to create win-win situations to benefit all? What happened? When did we stop if not embracing our differences, at least trying to understand opposing points of view? Unfortunately for humans, differences lead to fear. The animal relationships in nature remain constant, they are mostly the same now as they were 10, 100, or even 1000 years ago. Animals have evolved harmoniously because of their differences. Humans… Not so much.

So what happens when diversity stops being a catalyst for development and becomes a catalyst for destruction? Seems like we’re about to find out. Civil War II? The relationship between blacks and whites is tense. The anger between the left and rights is accelerating. Meanwhile, What’s going on in the rest of the world? I would imagine our adversaries are reveling in our internal fighting. It’s tough to fix the world when we can’t fix ourselves. Why can’t we be more like fish? Our country’s name is currently inaccurate. Can anyone argue that we’re United?  I didn’t think so. Doesn’t that make us the 'Divided States of America'? That leaves me with a line reverberating through my brain that gives me trepidation: ‘united we stand, divided we fall.’

I’ve got a game plan (not for saving the world, that plan fell just short). A plan for my immediate continued pseudo-sanity: I’m flying south to warm water and submersing myself in it for as long as I can! The bottom line is bottom time…

The way I see it, it comes down to two things. “Humans have the ability or choice to hate, the remainder of living things don’t” SL ….as you have witnessed above. Also… “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” Edmund Burke (1729-1797). History has now been edited and is no longer being taught in its complete and true form. “Post hoc ergo propter hoc”…..After this, therefore because of this. Often referred to as a false argument but in the case of history repeating itself, for lack of knowledge and learning from history, it has proven to be a true argument. Over time people continue to keep making the same mistakes all throughout history. What is good for the many is good for the one. You and Jessi can come over to my pool, it’s 97 degrees you don’t have to fly south!
